Naval 19′′ Cabinet
European customer needed COTS custom sized MIL cabinets to work with the new communication systems they were
installing on Naval ships.
Challenge
The customer faced a unique challenge as the footprint for the cabinets was much smaller than previous projects they worked on. The space restriction was in addition to the rugged requirements needed for a naval application.
They presented this opportunity to nVent SCHROFF to determine the solution as the customer had previously used nVent SCHROFF Varistar and Varistar CP MIL cabinets onto numerous projects. Customer had also visited the nVent SCHROFF factory in Straubenhardt, Germany and understood nVent SCHROFF’s in house capabilities.
This provided them knowledge and confidence of what is achievable from a cabinet solution so they could focus more on their core competencies.
Solution
nVent SCHROFF engineers and sales team met with the customer to understand the unique space and thermal challenges of the project. Through the review, nVent SCHROFF identified the customer would need custom internal equipment and cabling mounting provisions. Also, to address the thermal conditions in a tight space, nVent SCHROFF recommended cooling via custom fan trays with air baffles, and cabinet cover parts had some modifications including ventilation for airflow, with specific cable entry in the top cover and other cut outs.
To further check the size and effectiveness of the cabinet 3D models were made for the customer to verify the design and request changes after the review. Given the history of success with several Varistar and Varistar CP MIL cabinets, including this smaller design, the customer is already starting to work with nVent SCHROFF on their next project involving MIL cabinets.
